I'm thinking I'm a bit of a pushover because I usually let her watch the movie. In my defense, she does beg for it ALL DAY LONG. Plus she is so stinkin' cute. I can't say no. I've tried a few times and it turns into fits of rage and tears.
I did try to explain to her that the workers at the beginning on Aunt Em and Uncle Henry's farm are the tin man, scarecrow and the lion. She didn't really care or understand. Not sure why I even attempted to explain and ruin the magic of it all for her.
I'm bummed that Dorothy's red shoes were not on display when I went to the many Smithsonians. How cool would it be to wear these for a minute?! Probably the most coveted shoes on earth. The red shoes truly steal the show. How uncool would the whole movie be if Dorothy wore those black school shoes she wears in the beginning?!?
The movie is such a timeless classic and from it comes one of the most famous, and most sung/recorded songs on earth. One of my favorite versions is from Israel Kamakawiwo:

I absolutely love this version! First heard it on 50 First Dates and couldn't get enough of it!
I love girls with Wizard of Oz obsessions! My Maddy was just the same way. You'll have to get her some sparkly red shoes so she can click her heels.
p.s. I agree; best Over the Rainbow ever.
i will have to buy her some red shoes and a special carrying case for the DVD. she insists on carrying it with her everywhere and pointing out all the characters on the jacket.
I loved listening to this again. Thanks!
i think that's why i didn't really care when layla donned some sparkly red shoes (literally 4 sizes too big at first try-on) and just about never took them off. the toes are all scuffed and look like cardboard because the sparkles have worn away, but she still feels magical when she wears them. ahhh, wizard of oz. by the way, i can't believe naomi doesn't get scared at some parts of that movie! i guarantee carson would be under the covers in the neighbor's house when he spied the wicked witch's green face the first time. too cute.
A girl after my own heart! I have always loved the Wizard of Oz and have great memories of watching with my family when I was a little girl. I'm a bad mom though because Katie saw it for the first time just a couple of years ago. She was too old by then to be impressed. No matter, I will always love it.
wizard of oz is truly magical. i have wonderful memories of watching it as a child and then donning my mom's flowy pink pajama dress (it had been a gift from her mom or something) that looked similar to gilda's dress...or so i thought. to now share this movie with my kids and relive those memories is priceless. love it!
oh so cute...emme went thru the iron giant phase and pete's dragon too, but we haven't watched the wizard of oz yet (i'm a bad mother!). I read the book to joel (i do not recommend it...it's really boring actually and drags on and on and is SO different from the classic movie that i love). i love your kids cute halloween costumes, too! and is that your mom dressed as a witch? awesome!
